Landscape Maintenance program

This program serves the community by maintaining and preserving Fullerton’s rich history of green space and recreational areas including 52 parks, school grounds, 28 miles of recreational trails, 30 acres of median islands, and other City-owned property.  Its operations include landscape maintenance, irrigation repair and maintenance, recreational trail maintenance, tree and shrub planting, preparation and maintenance of sports fields, weed abatement, and pesticide application. 

The staff is comprised of landscape specialists including Certified Arborists, irrigation system technicians, sport field renovation crews, pesticide applicators, and general maintenance professionals. The goal of this division is to provide the highest service level possible with a focused emphasis on safety.

Tree Maintenance Program  - Urban Forestry 

Some of the essential services offered by the City to the community include routine pruning, removal, planting, and emergency cleanup of trees located within the City.  The division team manages approximately 40,000 trees in the public right-of-way such as residential neighborhoods, in front of businesses, parks, and trails. Trees are vital to our environment and everyday life activities. We do our best to maintain and restore areas with new and innovative ways to beautify our City one tree at a time.

Tree Trimming

To keep up maintenance and ensure a strong urban forest, the City aims to prune an average of 10,000 trees per year. Upon direction of the Public Works Department, West Coast Arborists, the City’s tree maintenance contractor, will prune, remove, and plant trees within City boundaries. Each tree receives equal care by employing the latest, up to date International Society of Arboriculture pruning standards.

We understand that not all trees grow in uniform fashion. If you feel your tree requires an inspection, the Tree Services Inspector will verify the tree needs and assign an out of cycle trim. This can include addressing immediate hazards and raising the tree driplines over the street and sidewalk until the next routine maintenance cycle.

Tree Removals

Public safety is our priority. We value every tree in our forest but understand some trees will exceed their life cycle and result in decline or death. Weather related events can also create hazards that will require trees to be removed to ensure our community is safe. If you have a tree you feel is dead, dying, or diseased, please contact Maintenance Services and submit your concern. The Tree Services Inspector will perform a thorough inspection and provide you with his/her findings. 

Tree Planting

The City is always looking to enhance and grow our community’s urban forest. Trees filter the air we breathe and provide us with natural benefits that improve our quality of life. Residents of the Fullerton community can apply for one or more free tree/s if you have a strip of land between the sidewalk and the curb. The tree species will be determined based on the area in which you live.

Cal Fire Grant Tree Planting

In June 2020, the City Council authorized the City to pursue a grant from Cal Fire aimed at enhancing the urban forest.

As part of this initiative, we are actively engaged in planting 500 trees by March 2024, with an particular focus on increasing the tree canopy in Disadvantaged Community Areas of the City.

• How do I determine if it is City-owned?

City-owned trees are planted and established in the parkway if front of your home- the strip of land between the sidewalk and the curb. If you are unsure if a tree is on City property, please contact Public Works Maintenance Services and a representative will assist you.

• Private Tree/Bush Obstructing a Public Right-of-Way 

If you would like to lodge a complaint about a private tree or bush that is obstructing a public-right-of way, call Code Enforcement at (714) 773-5704. 

• Trees on Private Property

Trees growing on private property are the sole responsibility of the owner to maintain. The City of Fullerton does not maintain trees in backyards, private streets, or HOA communities. If trees are in interference with power lines, please contact Southern California Edison for more information.
