Fullerton Compost Pile Program 

From May 21st to the beginning of July, free compost material will be provided for Fullerton residents. Our compost pile is located at 1600 W. Commonwealth Ave., next to the CNG station. Please bring your own buckets or bags to fill with compost. Shovels will be provided on site. 

If you find the compost pile is empty on your visit, please check back on the days below as staff is adhering to a compost pickup schedule with the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill:

Please note that if bulk compost and/or mulch material is needed, Orange County residents can pick up the material for free at the Frank R. Bowerman's Bee Canyon Greenery. 

Composting

What is Composting? 

Composting is a natural process of recycling organic matter like leaves, twigs, and food scraps into nutrient dense fertilizer that can enrich soil and plants. Over time these materials decompose and leave behind a product that looks similar to garden soil. Composting can be done right in your backyard with a mix of the right ingredients. These ingredients are:

  • Carbon-rich materials (“browns”) can include dry leaves, plant stalks, and twigs. The carbon-rich materials provide food for the microorganisms to consume and digest.
  • Nitrogen-rich materials (“greens”) include grass clippings and food scraps. The nitrogen-rich materials heat up the pile to create ideal conditions for the material to breakdown.
  • Water (moisture).
  • Air (oxygen).

Not only is composting a great way to gain nutrients needed for healthy soil, but it also helps us to meet California's SB 1383 waste diversion goals. To learn more about SB 1383 and how we are making strides to become a more sustainable, healthier state, click here.
