City of Fullerton to Honor Music Icon Mike Ness with Key to the City

FULLERTON, CA (MARCH 25, 2024) – In a heartfelt celebration of music, innovation, and hometown pride, the City of Fullerton is proud to announce a special ceremony honoring the legendary Mike Ness, frontman of the pioneering punk rock n roll band Social Distortion. This event is set to take place on Mike Ness’ birthday, April 3, 2024, at the Downtown Fullerton Plaza at the Fullerton Museum Center, starting at 3 p.m.

Mike Ness, whose roots are deeply embedded in Fullerton soil, has been a monumental figure in the punk rock scene, leading Social Distortion from its formation in the late 1970s to international acclaim. Ness's evocative lyrics and the band's powerful melodies have not only garnered a vast following but have also significantly shaped the cultural landscape of Fullerton and the punk rock n roll genre at large, fusing British and American punk rock with American roots music.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to music and the cultural heritage of Fullerton, Mike Ness will be presented with the Key to the City. This honor celebrates individuals who have made significant impacts through their achievements and embody the spirit and values of the Fullerton community.

Enhancing the celebration, the event will feature live performances by Greg Antista and The Lonely Streets, and Kid Ramos, artists who resonate deeply with the punk scene and Fullerton's musical legacy.

A highlight of the ceremony will be the presentation of a custom artwork by the acclaimed Los Angeles/Orange County-based painter, Jaime Zacarias, to Mike Ness. Zacarias, renowned for his vibrant and imaginative art, draws inspiration from his experiences and surroundings, including stylized Luchador masks and playful amoebas that captivate the viewer's imagination. This unique piece promises to capture the essence of Ness's impact on the punk rock genre and the community.

Mayor Nick Dunlap expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Mike Ness’s contributions to music and our community are truly immeasurable. His songs, filled with stories of resilience and struggle, speak to the heart of what it means to be from Fullerton. It is with great pride that we celebrate his legacy with the Key to the City. This event is a testament to the power of music in bringing people together and the indelible mark Mike has left on our city and the world. Like so many of us, I grew up listening to Social Distortion, and the fact they are from our hometown made the connection deeper.”

The ceremony is open to the public, and the city encourages fans and residents to join in this special occasion, celebrating the lasting legacy of Mike Ness. The event promises an unforgettable evening of music, art, and community spirit.
